Why another Markdown app

Markdown is everywhere now. Notes apps export it, developers write it, and AI assistants leave more and more of their work behind as .md files: plans, summaries, research, READMEs. Reading one of those shouldn't mean squinting at raw text in TextEdit or launching a full code editor.

Quill is the in-between that was missing: a quiet window that shows a Markdown file as the document it is, lets you edit it, and saves it back untouched. It's a lens on your files, not a library that holds them.

The page is the editor

Type straight into the formatted text. Marks like # and * appear only on the line you're editing, and a toggle shows the raw Markdown in the same place.

A lens, not a library

Notes stay ordinary .md files wherever they already live. Quill reads and saves them there. No database, no import, no lock-in.

Folders as projects

Open a folder and the sidebar shows its notes, with tabs for the ones you're working on. A journal sorted by year and month just works.

Never damages a file

Saving writes only what you changed and keeps line endings as they were. Unusual or binary files open read-only rather than risk harm.

At home on the Mac

Native menus, multiple windows, "Open with" from Finder, and light or dark following the system. Signed and notarized.

Stays current

Installed copies check for updates once a day and install them in a click, with a restart only when you say so.

Install

  1. Download Quill-0.2.1.dmg and open it.
  2. Drag Quill to your Applications folder.
  3. Double-click any .md file, or choose Open with → Quill.
